About Us, Madagascar Gems is the title... but really it is all about
you.
At Madagascar Gems rough gem stone sales to the trade is our business. We
take pride in supplying top grade facet rough to you. That is how we all make a
living.
We seem to be the only company selling quantities of
Madagascar facet rough on the internet... of any quality.
Why? Because that is the primary market niche our
customers require of us. Yes, we have requests to sell faceted gems as well, and
we do a little of that... but we focus on supplying rough gem stones to you, the
rough reseller or the small lapidary house.
Madagascar Gems is operated by two families, one in
Madagascar, and one in the USA (Arizona).
This collaboration offers you, our rough gem stone customers,
the advantages of both worlds.
Benefit To Madagascar
The people of Madagascar reserves the privilege of
operating gem mines (and other development of natural resources) substantially to its own
citizens.
In Madagascar, we need a better market for the gem rough we
wrest from the earth through great effort. We need to reach you, the buyer of
100 grams... or even smaller amounts of quality rough.
Madagascar Gems' operations in Madagascar allow us to
conduct our own mining activities, and to travel the bush country to buy the
production of other small mines. We have exclusive agreements to buy the entire
production of some small mines.
We travel the roads and jungle footpaths when they will lead us
to find a mine. In the desert, we journey cross-country on a
motor bike or 4x4 vehicle. Each year we travel thousands of kilometers by motor
bike, and hundreds of kilometers by foot. We camp out in our travels, or
possibly stay in a village "hotel" like the one pictured below.
Big-city accommodations and stores are rarely available.
This ability to aggregate the production of the small
mines allows us to supply larger quantities of some rough gem stones to
our customers, and much needed, more frequent paydays to our neighbors.
Quality rough gem stone is difficult to find and recover. A mining family
or village may often work for an entire month to
produce a single parcel.
The rough is sold to us to buy food... or possibly to
purchase zebus (cattle kept for
milk, meat, and work) or other necessities.
Pricing
Is it customary to discuss pricing strategy with potential
customers? In theory it is not.
However, we develop close working cooperation with our
customers and miners, and the pricing strategy is important for all to
understand. The sum of the strategy is... A Little Less.
The peoples of Madagascar must benefit from the sale of
the non-renewable natural resources. It is not moral to export Madagascar's
wealth without benefiting the people... so we must pay the people a fair
price.
In exchange for selling to us for A Little Less, we
offer them a steady market for quality rough, and on occasion, financial
assistance.
You pay A Little Less when you buy rough from us.
To gain and maintain customers we must supply quality goods and our tariff must
be A Little Less than suppliers in other countries.
To accomplish these ends, Madagascar Gems must benefit A
Little Less on each sale. We expect
to make it up on your repeat business.
About Our Gem Rough
At Madagascar Gems we make a careful selection of the gem rough offered for sale
through our
website.
Yes, we buy the mine-run production of many of the
family-operated gem mines we deal with, but lower quality rough is sold off to
others, offered as faceting training class material, or cabochon material.
Each parcel that we buy (or a large representative
sample) is subjected to examination before we offer it to our very important customers around the world.
Our rough gem stone material is observed in all directions,
and under different
lighting conditions, both natural light and artificial light sources.
This
first careful observation is the key to maintaining our reputation... Madagascar
Gems is a quality supplier.
At Madagascar Gems we look closely at the
features that will confirm the quality of the rough gemstone. We shun lower
quality material and encourage the miners to locate a ground that
yields clean, facet quality gems.
By Madagascar government regulation, we must repatriate the
value of exported rough within three months (bring the money home from our USA
office). This does not leave us much time to
market our rough in the USA and around the world.
Because of this regulation, we solicit orders
for rough and then travel the bush to source the rough for you. We especially
favor standing monthly orders. Twenty grams per month of this, and a hundred
grams of that, and ten grams of that other one, keeps us going.
At Madagascar Gems we take pride in supplying high
grade facet rough. In turn, our customers can take pride in the many
profitable gems they facet from our rough gem stone parcels and sell to the
jewelry industry or collectors.
Our
Affiliates
Madagascar Gems is affiliated with a few select
companies in an advertising sense... but not an ownership sense.
We are pleased to recommend these
companies to you for consideration.

Question
and Answers
Where is your price list?
Prices can vary due to
weather, supply, size, and other factors. The
" link appears on each web page. Use this link to request our
"general guide price list."
Is all of the rough you sell mined in Madagascar?
Yes... so far. We have considered reaching out to gem mining acquaintances
in other countries for rough that our customers need and we cannot source in
Madagascar.
If we ever do this, the material listing will clearly
announce the country of origin.
Why is the wording on the site so formal, yet funny
words and terms creep in?
Regarding the first portion of this question... we
avoid using contractions and words that may not translate accurately by
translation software. We deal with people speaking different languages, and
depend on these translators.
Now for the funny part... because we are funny - in
several ways:
Our operations partner
(Gilbert) speaks French and lives in Madagascar, where Malagasy is
spoken.
Our marketing partner
(Fred) speaks English and lives in Arizona.
We deal in the worlds
of gemstones and mining.
All of these environments influence the words we use.
Why do you allow Google advertising on
your website?
Customers can then easily see our price and service
advantages. By following the ad links customers will be able
to compare our prices for quality gem rough.
We also affiliate with a select few other companies
as shown above, and do
highly recommend their product/service.
We expect the advertising on this site to pay for the
operation and maintenance of this site, thus allowing our customers to pay only
for the actual gem rough.
Why does your email link have an anti-spam
guard?
"
Junk email (spam) is such a large problem. Many
websites that include their email address without a guard receive hundreds
of junk emails each day. We use an encryption service provided by a site
we found on the internet called Syronex. We know nothing else about them,
but... if you would like to use their service, go to http://w2.syronex.com/jmr/safemailto/.
